Swiss Berry Help

Ok, here’s an update on my fruit dilemma from yesterday. I found out that the Johannisbeeren are currants. Most folks suggested jam, but Kirsti suggested Eccles Cakes, so assuming I can get to the big super market nearby for “flakey pastry” I should be able to figure out what to do with them.

As for the other berries, no one can seem to find them, so I took pictures. I am quite the moron for assuming that because “Johannisbeeren” was printed on the outside of the carton for those berries, that “Thurgauer” was the name of the other fruit. I got a carton of raspberries today that also had “Thurgauer” on them. Upon closer inspection, it seems that the berries in question might be called stachelbeeren. Here’s a picture first of the stachelbeeren, and a few more pictures of all of the fruit, because the berries just looked too pretty not to be shot.

I found out that stachelbeeren are gooseberries. And the red ones are quite rare, especially in the US. I ended up getting an excellent recipe for Pork Chops with Gooseberries and cooked it up last night. Mmmmm!

  1. Oh no problem! 🙂

I had actually originally posted my question to friends and on another forum. My WordPress journal is brand-new so friends and family back home can follow along, and I’d copied the question over (and the answer).
